MINOR DETAILS PLUS

The placement test is required of every student with a prior knowledge of Spanish who wishes to enroll. The particular entry point within the sequence of language courses depends upon the results of a placement test, administered at the beginning of each semester for those beginning HISP111, 112 and 211.

Initial Placement for Hispanic Studies Language Courses Students who test out of 212, 311 and/or 312 must take additional 300 level courses beyond 312 to complete a minimumВ 24 credits. The Hispanic Studies MinorДЄ minor in Hispanic Studies consists of a minimum of 24 credits including 212, 311, 312 plusВ three four-credit courses in HISP numbered 320 and higher with an expectation of balance between literature, culture and linguistics. Students who test out of 212, 311 and/or 312 must take additional 300 level courses beyond 312 to complete the minimum 40 credits. Students wishing to obtain a high school or elementary teaching certificate should consult the department of Education for required or recommended courses. This rule does not affect HISP designated courses that are accepted by other programs (such as Latino/Latin American Studies). Courses taken in Spanish but with a disciplinary designation other than HISP will not be accepted as credits for the Hispanic Studies major or minor. Many of our students also pursue a minor in Latin American Studies or a double major in related fields such as Education, Management, Political Science, Biology, History, English, Nursing, Social Work, etc. Students who are unable to participate in a semester-long study abroad program can fulfill this requirement through an Internship or a summer program. All Hispanic Studies majors are required to spend at least one semester in a Spanish-speaking country. I love to travel and am always planning our next. A major in Hispanic Studies consists of a minimum of 40 credits including the following required courses: 212, 311, and 312 plus at least six four-credit courses in HISP numbered 320 and higher, plus 394, and may include 12 transfer credits for study abroad.
