Over the next 13 years the remaining colonists begin to develop a new self-identity. After the Seven Years War and in America the French and Indian War from 1754 to 1763, England won all rights to the Eastern Coastal territory of North America. Between Spain, France, and England there was a lot of blood spilt to gain economic rights of the Americas. Maintaining that this new world was rich with new opportunities, it is not surprising that so many different cultures fought over the territory. Even though the gold and silver would never be found, it was 'John Rolfe's experiments with tobacco that developed the first profitable export.'

After an extremely hard start and daily attacks from the Native Algonquian Indians, Smith and Wingfield teamed up to send a letter back to the Virginia Company promising gold and silver would soon be found.

This was certainly the case for Edward Wingfield and John Smith, who were high ranking officials for the Virginia Company. What about the power that comes with money in our society? For English settlers colonizing the Virginian coastal areas, striking gold and riches was the primary course of their destiny. Freedom from debt obviously, but also freedom from years of hard work by striking it rich. It could be argued that money could buy one's freedom. I'm sure there was a high degree of excitement for many early puritans that were beginning a new chapter in a new world. In the case of the Puritans, freedom to create new successes in economy with landholding and market commodities, such as cod as well as creating a moral community based on secular beliefs different their predecessors. If opportunity knocks, open the door, in John Winthrop's case - get on a ship and travel thousands of miles to live in a 'city upon a hill.' ДЇreedom is defined by perception. Some made the transition to the new economy others lost their fortunes to their overseers.' Debt is definitely a motivator to look for a fresh start. Why would I want to leave if I'm doing so well? Apparently, things weren't going so hot for John: 'inflationary pressures for rising rents conflicted with feudal injunctions to deal paternalistically with tenants. I'm a successful business man in the early 1600's with a lot of investments. I'm putting myself into John Winthrop's shoes for a moment. Even after his death, it seemed to be a difficult process to establish an Anglican order that appealed to everyone. I don't believe Henry VIII, being the ladies man that he was, seemed much of a role model for the standards the Puritans held themselves to. I'm sure it was hard in 16th Century England for a Puritan. Crude as they must have been, they still had the freedom to be so. In the book, The American Dream, I read a great deal in the first chapter of the Puritans. I feel this sense of excitement was the dominant trend of American Culture during the Colonial through the revolutionary period. I could regulate when I wanted to watch tv, play poker till four in the A.M., drink the devil's brew mostly it was the adventure of where I would take my life, now that I was in charge. After so many years being under the watchful, protective eyes of my loving mother, I couldn't wait to finally be out on my own. You know that feeling you got days before your senior trip, or the anticipation building up to the first week of college.
